Whether you have a car or a speedy Vespa, Tuscany is a lot of fun to explore on wheels.
Tuscany is a beautiful region of Italy, filled with wineries, delicious food, and medieval towns. One of the best ways to explore this region is on wheels, whether it’s a car or a Vespa. If you don’t have either, you can hire one or book a tour! This guide will give you an idea of how to explore Tuscany in a day, allowing you to easily visit different cities, taste the food, and sample the wine.
Florence to Greve in Chianti
Start the day in Florence and drive for 40 minutes through the rolling hills of Tuscany, heading towards Greve in Chianti. Within the Chianti region, known for the famous red wine, this small town features wineries where you can taste delicious Tuscan wines and enjoy some of the best food.
Greve in Chianti to San Gimignano
After enjoying the food and wine in Greve in Chianti, make your way towards San Gimignano, an hour’s drive away. The World Heritage Site of San Gimignano is a charming town perched on a hilltop, offering incredible views of the countryside. Known as the Town of Fine Towers, it is home to 14 towers alongside its palaces. Additionally, there are plenty of quaint shops to browse and buy from, as well as Sergio Dondoli’s gelato, which is considered one of the world’s best!
San Gimignano to Pisa
For the final stop of your day before heading back to Florence, drive just over an hour to Pisa. Thousands of people visit Pisa to see the iconic Leaning Tower, which is reason enough to visit the city! There are plenty of other attractions to see, conveniently located in the same square as the tower. After visiting the Leaning Tower, also check out the Pisa Cathedral, the Opera del Duomo Museum, and the Pisa Cemetery. The rest of the city is walkable, so you can explore the streets and laneways for some shopping and a drink.
Once you’ve seen all the sights in Pisa, head back to Florence, which is just over an hour’s drive away.
If you’re not comfortable driving through Tuscany, you can opt for a tour. This tour is very similar to this guide but includes Siena instead of Greve in Chianti. You will still enjoy some amazing Tuscan wine and food!
